TSP: Getting up to speed

As of August 2007, boards with dialect 20 or later will not support TSP. Please refer to Xwire instead. If you need a board with TSP you can reFLash a dialect 20 board back to an earlier dialect.

You probably just want to start using your TSP device as quickly as possible. Here's a road-map for you:

  1. Read and understand this document "Tiny Serial Peripheral - Overview and backgrounder". This will give you the basic understanding of how the TSP system works.
  2. Go quickly through the TSP instructions to familiarize yourself with what's there. Don't sweat on learning them, just know what is there and where to go looking later.
  3. Read up on the product documentation for the particular TSP device you are using. They all perform relatively complex functions, so they will necessarily take some study time.
  4. Plan how you are going to apply the TSP device to your application. In general, a TSP device interacts with the wide world outside of the SPLat. Figure out how that interaction is to work for you. In some cases, for example with a SitePlayer embedded web server, this may involve a considerable amount of planning, design and implementation.
  5. Figure out how the SPLat must interact with the TSP, both in terms of the outcomes (bringing about the required interactions with the outside world) and means (how to program it to make it do what you want).

Remember: To fail to plan is to plan to fail
