BEWARE: Virus hoaxes

About the easiest way anyone can cause malicious computer damage is to start an email virus hoax. You don't need any programming skills, just the ability to write an email. The worst type of hoax is one that tells you so-and-so file on your computer is a virus, and advises you to delete it at once. If you fall for such a hoax you could do irreparable damage to your system software, and by passing on the hoax cause your friends to damage their computers as well.

So, next time you receive an email warning about a 'New Virus', check it out before you delete any files or forward the email to all your friends.

Checking out a hoax is easy. Just copy the name of the offending file or the name of the virus into your favourite search engine (I use www.google.com), add the word 'hoax' and see what you turn up. You can also try looking up the alleged virus name in one of the anti-virus software sites. Most makers of anti-virus software provide lists of genuine and hoax viruses.
