Tech Support: Buying LCDs

Rich wrote:

Hi David; I am considering the separate purchase of the LCD for my MMi202OEM controllers, in production. Can you tell me the name of one or more manufacturers whose mounting holes would match the face panel? Also, what other components would I need to purchase( driver, contrast pot)?? Thanks, Rich

Hi Richard,

I refrain from suggesting specific manufacturers because there are so many, and different ones are available in different countries. The mounting hole pattern is only part of the equation. Assuming you make your own mounting panel, that should be the least of it.

2x16 displays tend to follow 4 pattern:

  • The one we use, with all connections in two rows at one end.
  • Like what we use but with + and - supplies reversed (!)
  • The connections in a single row along the top long edge.
  • The connections in a single row along the bottom long edge.
You can find information on selecting and wiring LCDs in the SPLat Knowledge Base

The MMi board contains all the electronics and the contrast pot as standard.

If you buy an LCD with backlight you are going to have a bit of a challenge supplying power for the backlight. There is some information here. The 5V rail on the MMi can supply up to about 40mA for the LCD backlight, providing there is a heatsink added to the regulator chip. We have our LCDs custom made with the correct series resistor on the LCD board. Study one of our boards to see what we do.

When you have picked a display that looks right, feel free to run it past us for comment.
