A smart guy, and a salutary warning.

I had noticed that our Field Engineer in Boston, Fred Pacilli, had not been visible on my Skype screen for a couple of days. That means his computer was turned off. Fred just wrote me this:

I don't know if many people outside of New England are aware of the weather here, but a couple of days ago we had a terrific (proper usage for the word) weather front go by and a lot of lightning. My hard drive with all my business application was damaged. But, I had backups. No information lost. But, I had to re-install the OS and then go through this horrendous updating process that seems to go on forever. Then every application I put in has an update of its own.

I'm back as of 1200hr Friday.

Do you do meticulous backups? Do you check from time to time that the backup files can actually be restored? I have heard of people losing their business because they didn't.
